Thilamalé Bridge Project Crosses Major Threshold With Completion of Piling Phase

The Thilamalé Bridge, one of the Maldives' most consequential infrastructure projects, has reached a significant milestone with the completion of its piling works, as confirmed by Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure. He described the phase as the most technically demanding aspect of the development.

"The piling work for the Thilamalé Bridge has been successfully completed, marking the most challenging phase of the project," Minister Muththalib said in a social media post. He noted the scale of the completed work: "A total of 263 piles were installed across 68 onshore and offshore locations," he stated. In his update, the minister also shared the project's current status. "With this milestone achieved, the project has now reached 60.84% completion," Minister Muththalib said.

The structure spans 6.7 kilometres, connecting four distinct areas in the Greater Malé region. Interchange points will be located at each island, with provisions made for designated parking infrastructure.

Under the ministry's timeline, the segment linking Malé and Gulhifalhu is slated for completion by the end of March 2026, with the Gulhifalhu-Thilafushi section expected to follow by the end of September. Final handover to the government remains scheduled for 30 September 2026, according to the ministry.

The government has conducted multiple consultations with senior Indian officials, reaffirming its commitment to the project's timely delivery, the ministry earlier announced.
