Minister Warns of Danger to Maritime Professionalism from Harassment

The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen has stressed on the need to strengthen mechanisms to protect seafarers from harassment.

In his message on the occasion of the Day of the Seafarer 2025, Minister Ameen noted the significance of this year’s theme, 'My Harassment-Free Ship' designated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

The Minister in his message, paid tribute to the important role played by seafarers in the global economy, carrying cargo between countries even during difficult times like the Covid-19 pandemic with no regard to personal safety or self preservation.

He stressed on the importance of this field, which according to him requires patience and skill. The Minister said it was important for seamen working in an isolated environment for months on end, to have a strong support system, adding that harassment and abuse remains a threat to the essence of maritime professionalism.

Ensuring a ship is free from harassment is not only a moral imperative, he said, adding that if seafarers feel safe, respected and appreciated, they will be more productive and better equipped to face the challenges of the work environment.

The Minister also noted that this year's slogan is not confined to just seafarers, calling for stronger policies, training programmes, reporting systems and fast and fair action systems across all industries.

He reminded shipping companies to provide safe and timely disembarkation arrangements for employees, health care and compliance with employment contracts to ensure the rights of seafarers.
