The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, has stated that the discussions at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference will provide further assistance towards the sustainable use of Maldivian waters.
In an interview given following the conclusion of the conference, Minister Thoriq said that the Ocean Conference explored the sustainable management of the Maldives’ marine resources, and outlined future plans in this area. While a special side event led by the Maldives was held on the sidelines of the conference, the Minister said the initiative will have long-term benefits the Maldives.
"The side event discussed challenges facing Maldivian waters and explored potential solutions with conference participants. The side event was very well received. We believe this event will contribute in the protection and sustainable use of the Maldives’ marine environment," he said.
The Minister noted that this year’s conference saw an increase in the number of countries joining the Convention on the Protection of Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction. Noting that the Maldives was among the first countries to sign the Convention, the Minister said the number of countries signing the Convention has now reached 50.
"We are aiming to reach 60 signatories this year, and commence the treaty’s implementation. Overall, it was a very successful conference. The conference will provide the necessary assistance from the international community," he said.
Minister Thoriq, along with the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, represented the Maldives at the Ocean Conference in Nice, France, which was held from 9 to 13 June. The conference, which is held every two years, this year featured various discussions and panel discussions across 10 thematic areas, including ocean management, protection and sustainable use of ocean resources.
