The Zakat Fund has spent more than USD 123,216 on medical treatment of the underprivileged in the first four months of this year, according to statistics.
According to statistics, the Zakat Fund provided medical assistance to 102 people in January this year, which amounted to USD 49,370 out of the total allocated USD 97,276 for the month.
In January, the highest amount allocated from the Zakat Fund was for cancer treatment, equalling USD 12,924.
Last February, the Zakat Fund provided medical assistance worth USD 49,230 to 89 people.
The following month, 68 people received a total of USD 54,946 for their medical treatment from the Zakat Fund.
The Zakat Fund provided USD 71,335 for the medical treatment of 111 people in April, statistics showed.
In addition to medical expenses, the Zakat Fund had provided financial assistance as essential aid, Quran and religious education.
Although the collection and distribution of Zakat was previously done by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, it is now the responsibility of the Maldives Zakat House. The Zakat House was established with the recommendation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, and was inaugurated in January 2024.
