President Affirms Strong Bilateral Ties with Nepal on Republic Day

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to its longstanding diplomatic relationship with Nepal, expressing confidence that their ties would continue to strengthen for mutual benefit.

Marking Nepal's Republic Day, President Muizzu extended greetings to Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli through an official message shared on X, highlighting the significance of the occasion and the enduring friendship between the two nations. In formal letters addressed to Nepal's leadership, he conveyed warm wishes on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives.

"Today is a day of commemoration of the national unity alongside diversity strongly upheld by the Nepalese people, and I hope for continued peace and progress for Nepal in the future," he stated in his X post.

Reflecting on bilateral relations, President Muizzu highlighted the close neighbourly bond between the two countries. "May our good relations go from strength to strength for the common benefit of the people of both our countries," he added. Acknowledging the contributions of Nepalese expatriates residing in the Maldives, he recognised their integral role in the country’s socioeconomic development.

Concluding his message, President Muizzu extended his sincere wishes for the well-being of Nepal's leadership and reiterated his hopes for continued peace, progress, and prosperity for the Nepalese people.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Nepal were formally established on 1 August 1980. Over the past 45 years, Nepal has extended various forms of assistance to the Maldives, contributing to its development. Notably, during this period, Nepal has facilitated opportunities in the health sector, enabling Maldivian doctors to pursue specialised training and professional advancement.
