President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan as Special Envoy of the President, entrusting him with advancing diplomatic relations and pursuing economic opportunities for the country. The appointment ceremony was held at the President's Office on Monday.
Following the announcement, President Muizzu met with President Waheed, commending his diplomatic acumen and extensive experience in statecraft. Describing him as a "seasoned diplomat" and a "capable person", he underscored the significance of the role and encouraged President Waheed to strengthen the Maldives' global partnerships. He further assured him of unwavering support in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to him.
President Waheed welcomed the appointment with gratitude, according to a statement by the President's Office, reaffirming his commitment to executing his duties with diligence and professionalism. He underscored that his efforts would align with the president's strategic vision, ensuring continuity in diplomatic initiatives and economic collaborations.
A distinguished statesman, President Waheed brings a breadth of expertise to the position. His tenure in public service includes serving as president and vice president of the country, representing Malé in parliament, and holding senior positions within the Ministry of Education. His international experience spans various assignments with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). Notably, he assumes the position of special cnvoy without remuneration.
