Creative Industry Expected to Surpass 2030 Growth Target, Says President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that his administration will achieve its target of increasing the creative industry's contribution to 15 percent of the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ahead of the original 2030 deadline. His remarks came following a visit to the Maldives Expo 2025, which opened on Friday.

President Muizzu inaugurated the exhibition on 23 May and returned the following day to tour stalls, review exhibits, and meet with creators. Speaking exclusively to PSM News during his visit, he addressed the sector's economic potential, describing the exhibition as a successful effort to showcase Maldivian creativity.

Participation at the event was strong, he noted, with presentations spanning a range of disciplines. The exhibition, he said, marks the beginning of broader efforts to elevate the industry's role in the national economy. Reaffirming his commitment to expanding the creative economy, President Muizzu underscored his administration's pledge to ensure the industry contributes 15 percent of GDP by 2030. Yet, after witnessing the enthusiasm and talent on display, he suggested that the goal might be achieved sooner than anticipated.

"I have announced my decision that by 2030, the creative industry will contribute 15% of the nation's total GDP," he stated. "Given the growing interest at present, this target could be achieved even sooner." Supporting the sector is a key responsibility, the president said, pointing to initiatives outlined in his government's manifesto. These include the establishment of a comprehensive payment gateway system and the introduction of seller accounts to facilitate commercial engagement, he said.

President Muizzu also announced plans to launch a digital platform designed to expand opportunities for Maldivian creatives, both within the country and abroad. Building upon existing infrastructure, the initiative aims to bolster the industry's growth and accessibility. He further revealed that preparations are underway to designate the coming year as the Year of National Innovation. He concluded by reaffirming his administration's commitment to advancing economic opportunities for Maldivian citizens and driving national progress.
