Maldives and Thailand Sign MoU to Boost Public Health Cooperation

The Ministry of Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of public health. The signing took place during the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

Under the MoU, the two countries agreed to strengthen primary health care in Maldives and the regulatory capacity of Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA). They agreed to collaborate for training institutions for health professionals and human resource development for health, health policy and health system research, health information and information technology, and innovative sustainable financing for health promotion among others.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said Thailand has made great progress in health in the region. Therefore, a country like the Maldives stands to benefit significantly from Thailand’s expertise, he said.

"Thailand has made great strides in health in the region. Its assistance can be sought to develop human resources. The top priority under this three-year MoU will be to strengthen the Maldives’ primary healthcare,” the Minister said.

The MoU was signed by State Minister of Health Khadeeja Abdul Samad Abdulla on behalf of Maldives, and by Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Health Dej-is Khaothong signed on behalf of Thailand.
