Primary Objective of Maldives 2.0 is Eradicating Corruption: President

The primary objective of ‘Maldives 2.0’, an initiative aimed at digitising the Maldives, is to eliminate corruption, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said Thursday.

Speaking during the fifth episode of the ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku’ podcast, the President explained that automating and digitalising public services would significantly reduce opportunities for abuse of power, improve access to information, eliminate corruption, and enhance transparency.

He noted that, under such a digitalised system, the entire government, along with key service providers and private sector institutions, would be interconnected and integrated through a unified network. He also revealed that a draft of the necessary legislation to support this initiative is currently being prepared.

The President emphasised that the four-year digitalisation project will be carried out in collaboration with Estonia, a country renowned for its digital advancements.

He announced that the Maldives Digital Transformation Summit, which begins on Friday evening, marks the official launch of the initiative. A team of Estonian experts, including one of the pioneers of Estonia’s digitalisation efforts, will be participating in the conference. The President expressed his gratitude to the Estonian government for their support and cooperation.

He further stated that the goal is to realise the vision of Maldives 2.0 within a short timeframe. The Government, he said, is working to achieve in four years what Estonia accomplished in twenty-five, adding that Estonian authorities believe this target is attainable, based on their own experience.

President Dr Muizzu underlined the importance of change management and public acceptance in the successful implementation of such reforms. He also affirmed that by 2030, 15 percent of the Maldives’ production will rely on the digital economy.
