President Congratulates Singapore Prime Minister on Re-Election

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong on his re-election after his long-time ruling party secured a landslide victory in the country’s general elections.

Wong's People's Action Party took all but 10 seats in the 97-seat unicameral legislature with a total of 65.57 percent of the more than 2.4 million votes.

Wong’s electoral success was recognised by President Dr Muizzu in a message shared on social media, describing the victory as “significant.”

President Dr Muizzu wished Prime Minister Wong much success in the responsibilities to lead Singapore in this new term.

“Looking forward to deepening the long standing partnership and friendship between Maldives and Singapore,” he said.

Popular after leading Singapore's Covid task force, Wong took over last year from his predecessor Lee Hsien Loong, the son of founding premier Lee Kuan Yew, who ruled the island state after its bitter break-up with Malaysia in 1965.
