Broadcom President urges action on journalist safety

President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) Mariyam Waheeda has emphasized the urgent need for stronger measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists in a video statement released on World Press Freedom Day.

Mariyam underscored the vital role of press freedom in the Maldives, emphasizing that for journalism to thrive within a democracy, it must be further expanded and enhanced. She further stressed the importance of raising awareness among journalists regarding media ethics and other crucial aspects of their profession.

Addressing the challenges faced by Maldivian journalists, Mariyam acknowledged that despite improvements in journalism, press freedom continues to encounter obstacles. She noted instances where complaints have been lodged with the councils and efforts made to address them.

On World Press Freedom Day, Mariyam highlighted the significant challenges confronting journalists worldwide, including the ongoing terror directed towards Palestinians. She commended journalists for their efforts in raising awareness about such issues despite facing persistent challenges.
