Highest amount of Green Tax received from Kaafu Atoll and Raa Atoll

Ministry of Finance released statistics indicating that Kaafu and Raa Atoll were the leading contributors to green tax revenue in January.

During the month, a total of USD 6.4 million in green tax revenue was generated. This comprised USD 6.3 million from resorts, guest houses, and hotels, USD 161,000 from safaris, and USD 765 from home-stay facilities.

However, it's noteworthy that green tax revenue experienced a decline compared to January of the previous year, which amounted to USD 6.5 million.

The highest revenue from green tax was collected from Kaafu Atoll, totaling USD 2.1 million, with USD 1.9 million coming from resorts and USD 200,000 from guest houses.

Leading atolls in green tax collection were:

  • Kaafu Atoll: USD 2.1 million
  • Raa Atoll: USD 627,000
  • Alifu Dhaalu Atoll: USD 601,000
  • Dhaalu Atoll: USD 504,000

Green tax is imposed on resorts, tourist hotels, and tourist transportation fees, typically at a rate of USD 6 per day.

Additionally, tourists staying in hotels or guest houses with more than 50 rooms registered are charged USD 6 per day, while those in resorts with 50 or fewer registered rooms are charged USD 3 per day.
