STELCO opens opportunity to install solar panels for rent

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has opened applications for interested individuals seeking to rent out rooftops for the installation of solar panels under the Avikatha programme.

Under the project, STELCO will be renting the roof of houses to install solar panels to allow households to generate revenue. Individuals interested in installing solar panels need to have permission from the homeowner. Additionally, the building needs to have a rooftop that spans 100sqft and is exposed to sunlight, with the capacity to sustain 150kg in weight. STELCO stated that it will also pay a monthly lease payment of USD11.71 for each 1kW solar panel installed.

The programme is being conducted in the Greater Male' Region as well as in the islands served by the company. STELCO has been working to increase renewable energy production in the country since 2020 as part of the efforts of the Maldives to become carbon-neutral by 2030.
