National energy efficiency and conservation campaign launched

Ministry, of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has launched Hakatha Samakaara, the national energy efficiency and conservation campaign. The objective of the campaign is to increase the awareness on energy efficiency, conservation and promote the use of energy efficient products in the Maldives.

At the campaign launching ceremony, Deputy Minister Ali Majid said that the campaign aims to reduce the release of toxic gases and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 by encouraging energy efficiency and conservation. He also highlighted the importance of illuminating houses and offices with natural light instead of electrical lights and being diligent in switching off lights when not in use.

The environment ministry stated that the campaign will include spreading messages on social media and encouraging government offices to use energy efficient products. Information on energy efficiency and conservation will also be provided to school students, teachers, and journalists during the campaign.

Additionally, the ministry stated that the use of electricity increases during the month of Ramadan and during warm weather. This year’s Ramadan coincides with the warmest period of the year.
