President holds talks with MRM on rejoining coalition

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has held talks with senior members of the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) on rejoining the ruling government coalition for the upcoming presidential election.

President Solih held the meeting at the President’s Office with the leader of MRM former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President of MRM Faris Maumoon, Vice President Shazail Shiyam, and Secretary General Abdul Aleem. The meeting also included Chairperson of main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Fayyaz Ismail.

The senior members of MDP and MRM concluded the meeting after agreeing to hold further discussions. After the meeting, MRM stated that it has not made a decision on whether to rejoin the coalition.

President Solih will be running in the presidential election on the MDP ticket and Adhaalath Party (AP) has agreed to support him by rejoining the government coalition. Meanwhile, Jumhooree Party (JP) has decided to field its own candidate and lead its own coalition for the election.
