Power outages may occur if land not allocated for transformer

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has expressed concern over the possibility of power outages in three areas of Male' City if Male' City Council does not provide the land for the new transformers.

In a statement, STELCO said it had repeatedly requested the city council to provide land for additional transformers at substations in three areas of Male'. The company has not received any reply to the letters to this date. STELCO said the new transformers should be installed at the substations in Gaakoshi, Sinamale' 2, the substation opposite the parking zone in front of Majeediyya School and the substation adjacent to the Viyafaari Veringe Miskiy.

STELCO stated the 630 KVA transformer installed inside Sinamale' 2 is already overloaded and has to transfer some of its load to other nearby transformers and has overloaded. As such, the company formally requested the city council on May 2, 2021 to acquire the land required for the substation to install an additional transformer.

Additionally, the 630 KVA transformer installed on the parking zone adjacent to the Viyafaari Veringe Miskiy is 81% utilised. On September 13, 2021, STELCO sent a letter to the city council requesting it to provide land for the expansion of the substation in order to install an additional transformer. On May 23, 2021, the city council was asked to provide land for an additional transformer near the parking zone in front of Majeediyya School which 73% of the 630 KVA transformers have been utilised. However, STELCO has expressed concern that the city council has not provided the necessary land for the project.

In its letters to the city council describing the condition of these substations, STELCO said that if the transformers are not installed as a matter of urgency, residents in these areas are likely to face hardships such as power outages in the coming days. These lands should be settled and these transformers should be installed as soon as possible as Ramazan is approaching and the transformers may overload and power outages may occur.

The city council denies that it has given land for the transformers. The council said it had notified STELCO to vacate the land in all three areas. However, the company seeks to register the land, which already has substations in many areas of Male'. The council said some of the properties have been built on two floors and none of the land has been registered with STELCO. The lands can be registered after completing the relevant procedures.
