The Help Pakistan Telethon to help those affected by devastating floods in Pakistan has been concluded successfully.
The High Commission of Pakistan in the Maldives, Pakistan-Maldives Friendship Association (PMFA), the state-run Public Service Media (PSM), and other media outlets in the country jointly conducted the event held to raise funds to help those affected by the recent floods in Pakistan.
The telethon raised more than USD161,814. The telethon which ran from 8000hrs to 0000hrs saw fund boxes set up in five areas of the city to help Pakistan. Fund boxes have been set up at Artificial Beach, Villimale' Ferry Terminal, Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu, TVM Building, Republican Square, and Hulhumale' Phase 1 and Phase 2 to help Pakistan. In addition, donations were made to the accounts of PMFA through Dhiraagu Pay and Ooredoo M-Faisa.
Unusually heavy monsoon rains have caused devastating floods in both the north and south of Pakistan, affecting more than 30 million people and killing more than 1,000 people. The South Asian nation was already in an economic crisis, facing high inflation, a depreciating currency, and a current account deficit. The United Nations (UN) states that the humanitarian crisis in the country will worsen in the coming days.
Furthermore, more than 1,460 health facilities have been damaged in various parts of Pakistan. Of these, 432 centres have been damaged beyond repair. The floods have hit the southern region of Sindh the hardest.
