WAMCO exploring possibility of combining waste disposal bill with utility bills

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has commenced discussions with relevant authorities on combining the waste disposal bills of households with utility bills.

Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Managing Director of WAMCO Yoosuf Siraj said the company is currently facing major challenges due to the large number of unregistered households in the Greater Male’ Region seeking waste disposal services from the company without paying. Siraj said the number of households registered for waste disposal services in the capital has decreased from about 22,000 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to approximately 14,000. He said as a result the company is not able to generate a suitable revenue for its services, which presents further obstacles in strengthening its services and upgrading its operations.

Speaking further, Siraj said discussions have been initiated with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology and other relevant authorities, to find policy-level solutions to the problem. As such, he noted discussions are being held on combining the waste disposal bill with utility bills of households.

WAMCO provides waste collection and disposal services in the Greater Male’ Region as well as atolls. WAMCO charges a monthly fee of USD10 for the service.
