Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed over 1,000 vehicles were seized within the last six months due to the driver not holding a valid driving licence.
Speaking at a press conference, Superintendent of Police Hussain Sameer revealed the Traffic Police Department is undertaking several efforts to eliminate illegal and dangerous driving in the Greater Male’ Region. As such, he noted 1,030 vehicles were seized within the last six months due to drivers not holding a valid driver’s licence. He noting MPS is also seizing vehicles found violating traffic regulations and driving dangerously, adding such vehicles are seized for a period of 30 days.
Speaking at the press conference, Chief Inspector of Police Abdul Matheen Abdul Kareem said there have been many road accidents caused by overtaking on the wrong side or turning into a road without giving way to other vehicles. He urged all road users to follow the traffic regulations in order to minimise accidents that lead to serious injuries or death. He added MPS is also using speed guns on some roads of Hulhumale’ to control speeding, noting video footage will be used to take action against such vehicles even if the vehicles do not stop on the command of the traffic police.
Several road accidents have occurred in the Greater Male’ Region over the last one week. As such, a major collision between a car and a bus in Male’ earlier this week led to the death of a woman and life-threatening injuries to several others.
