President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has ratified the first amendment to the Water and Sewerage Act. The Parliament passed the bill at its 35th sitting of the first session on April 25, 2022.
The amendment repealed and restructured some sections of the legislation. It added two subsections to Section 11, which entail quality assurance measures such as consulting with experts when designing sewerage systems. The bill also added subsections to Section 54 of the law, allowing authorities to impose fines on contractors for failing to adhere to standards set in the law. The penalties could range from USD30 to USD65,000.
Upon ratification, the amendment has been published in the Government Gazette.
