In a statement issued on May 9, the Maldivian high commission noted a nationwide curfew has been imposed in Sri Lanka following violent clashes amid the ongoing protests. The high commission advised Maldivians living in Sri Lanka to follow the instructions of authorities and to exercise precaution. The high commission also urged Maldivians in Sri Lanka to call the hotline of the high commission 0768816666 during emergency situations.
Protests against the Sri Lankan government began due to the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, which has seen rapid hikes in prices of essential items in the country. There have been reports of deaths and serious injuries following violent clashes that have broken out amid the protests.
