Ministry of Islamic Affairs has distributed Zakat al-Fitr to 1,780 people registered as poor in the Greater Male’ Region.
The Islamic ministry revealed over USD460,000 was received as Zakat al-Fitr by the end of the 29th day of Ramadan. The ministry said the funds received as Zakat have been distributed among 1,780 of the 1,782 registered as poor in the Greater Male’ Region. The ministry said the remaining two will receive their Zakat once the ministry is able to contact them.
In addition to cash and online transactions, the Islamic ministry also collected Zakat al-Fitr in the form of staple food. As such, the ministry revealed 1,187.85kg of staple food were collected as Zakat from 3,938 people.
Zakat al-Fitr is collected during the month of Ramadan every year, to be distributed among the poor. The minimum amount due is the equivalent of 2.4 kilograms of wheat flour, rice, or other staple food, per member of the household.
