Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has revealed most teachers will receive wages in excess of USD1,200 following the implementation of changes announced for the wage structure of the education sector.
Speaking at a press conference held to provide information on the increments provided to teachers’ wages, Finance Minister Ameer revealed teachers classified under Rank 2 will receive the highest increment, with their monthly wages increasing from USD800 to USD1,260. The minister noted teachers classified under Rank 1 will receive an increment from USD700 to USD860. He added higher rank teachers will all receive in excess of USD1,200, with Rank 5 teachers expected to receive USD1,680.
The finance minister further noted principals will receive even larger increments under the new pay structure, with the lowest rank principals also receiving an 82% increment from USD1,080 to USD1,980. Rank 2 and Rank 3 principals will receive USD2,140 and USD2,300 respectively under the new pay structure.
The changes to the pay structure of the education sector were first announced during the 2022 Presidential Address delivered by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the Parliament of the Maldives last February. The new pay structure is part of the government’s efforts to provide better wages for all in the workforce that contribute towards national progress.
