State funds distributed to four political parties

Ministry of Finance has distributed state funds to four eligible political parties.

The Political Parties Act states that 0.01% of the state budget should be distributed to registered political parties with 10,000 or more members. The four eligible parties are the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), as well as government coalition partners Jumhooree Party (JP) and Adhaalath Party (AP). As such, MDP has 54,660 members, PPM has 34,237 members, JP has 20,107 members and AP has 10,554 members. The ministry distributed around USD971,000 to MDP, USD609,000 to PPM, USD356,000 to JP, and USD188,000 to AP.

There are currently 11 registered political parties in the Maldives, with most being below 10,000 members. The last party to be registered in the country was the Maldives National Party (MNP).
