Maldivians living in Sri Lanka urged to stay safe amid ongoing protests

The High Commission of the Maldives in Sri Lanka has urged Maldivians living in or near areas of ongoing protests against the Sri Lankan government to exercise precaution and to stay safe.

In a statement issued on April 20, the Maldivian High Commission noted there have been reports of several injuries amid clashes between police and protesters in Sri Lanka. The high commission advised Maldivians living in or near the areas of protests to exercise precaution and stay safe. The high commission also urged Maldivians in Sri Lanka to carry their passports with them when going out, and to call the hotline of the high commission 0768816666 during emergency situations.

Protests against the Sri Lankan government began due to the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, which has seen rapid hikes in prices of essential items in the country. Protesters are calling for the resignation of all senior government officials who they believe are responsible for the economic policies which led to the current economic situation.
