Maldives and Bangladesh agree regularisation of undocumented workers is priority

The Maldives and Bangladesh have agreed that the regularisation of the undocumented workers is of the highest priority, and crucial for ensuring their safety, security, and protection of their rights. The discussions took place during a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and by the High Commissioner of Bangladesh Rear Admiral S M Abul Kalam Azad.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid congratulated High Commissioner Abul Kalam on presenting his credentials to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and expressed confidence that the relations between the two countries will be further enhanced during his tenure. The minister acknowledged the time-tested close relations between Maldives and Bangladesh and expressed his gratitude to the Government of Bangladesh for the numerous contributions toward the development of the Maldives.

Furthermore, Minister Shahid in particular noted the generous assistance extended by Bangladesh to the Maldives in combatting COVID-19 and the valuable contributions made by Bangladeshi workers in the socio-economic sector. Recalling the many high-level visits exchanged between the two countries last year, the minister noted that the bilateral relations between the two countries have reached unprecedented levels.

High Commissioner Abul Kalam thanked the minister for the warm welcome and conveyed his strong commitment to work closely with the Government of the Maldives in areas of common interest.
