Ministry of Home Affairs has announced seeking a party to construct a 50-unit cell at Maafushi Prison.
The home ministry announced plans to design the concept and prepare a detailed drawing of 50-cell units to increase the capacity of Maafushi Prison. Four jails are located in the Maldives to hold people in the investigation process, which are, Male’ Jail, Hulhumale' Jail, Himmafushi, and Maafushi Jail. These prisons have a combined capacity of 1,300 people.
Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has said there are currently 2,000 inmates in prisons which is 700 inmates more than the capacity. The administration has initiated a multi-faceted effort to increase prison space and improve prison conditions. As part of the initiation, interested parties are asked to submit bids for the planning and designing of additional 50-cell units for Maafushi Prison. Participants in the bid must inform the ministry before 1200hrs on April 20 via email. The opening ceremony of the bid will be held on April 24.
The government is also working on the construction of a prison in Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll as part of the efforts to address the difficulties faced by inmates due to the current condition of prisons.
