The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced a candidate from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and a candidate from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have won seats on the Women's Development Committee (WDC) of Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
The by-election to appoint two members for Neykurendhoo WDC was held on April 16 from 0800hrs to 1500hrs. Two candidates from the MDP, two candidates from PPM, and two candidates from Adhaalath Party contested in the by-election.
The by-election was won by Khadheeja Ibrahim from PPM and Aminath Suwaida from MDP. Neykurendhoo WDC now consists of two members from MDP, two members from PPM, and one member from Adhaalath Party, following the results of the by-election.
The ECM has been holding by-elections for WDC in several islands due to the resignation of some of the members due to various reasons. The electoral body said efforts are underway to find a legal solution to the issue since holding by-elections is expensive.
The next by-election will be held to elect a member of the WDC for Villimale'. The by-election will be held on April 16.
