Sign language interpretation to be provided during parliament sittings

The Secretariat of the Parliament of the Maldives has decided to use a sign language interpreter for parliament sittings.

As such, Mariyam Fazni has been hired to interpret discussions at parliament sittings using sign language. Fazni was the sign language interpreter for the government press conferences held during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is also known for her work to provide assistance and information to people with hearing loss.

The decision to hire a sign language interpreter was made after a participant in the Practice Parliament for Youth programme made the request to Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. The parliament secretariat also aims to use sign language interpreters for parliamentary committee meetings.
