Citizens benefit from progress made by MPS: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated citizens benefit from the progress made by the Maldives Police Service (MPS). He made the remarks at the ceremony held to mark the 89th anniversary of the police service in the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Imran said MPS is a national institution and as such every step it takes in increasing its capability is a benefit to the nation and that every obstruction it faces is also an obstruction for the nation. The minister said police officers have the highest responsibility of protecting citizens and their property and maintaining peace and harmony in the nation and thanked all police officers and their families for their hard work and sacrifices.

Also at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said MPS has made huge strides in the past three years to fulfill its responsibility to make the Maldives a peaceful country. He said MPS has been reformed and modernised to increase public confidence in the institution and praised police officers and the assistance provided by the public in their work to instill a peaceful society. As such, he said police officers routinely interact with members of the public to assist them.

Furthermore, Commissioner Hameed highlighted the importance of using modern technology to improve police services and said that tools such as body-worn cameras are helpful to both citizens and police officers in guaranteeing their safety and successfully solving cases. He said body-worn cameras also reduce public complaints about police conduct and hold officers accountable.
