Over 94,000 people eligible to vote in MDP’s internal elections

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed over 94,000 people are eligible to vote in the party’s internal elections to be held in May.

MDP is set to conduct the elections of the party’s chairperson, as well as the presidents of the youth and women’s wings on May 14. MDP has published the voters’ list for the elections, which includes 94,214 eligible voters. MDP said all individuals who had registered as members of the party by the deadline for the submission of candidacy for the elections would be eligible to vote.

MDP’s chairperson election is contested by Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy. Meanwhile, the presidency of the women’s wing is contested by Parliamentarian Rozaina Adam and Safa’ath Ahmed.

The elections were initially scheduled to be held on April 16. However, the National Congress of MDP passed the decision to postpone the election to May 14, to avoid conducting the elections during the month of Ramadan.
